The Ferry

"The Algiers ferry?" you say. "But I'm not going to Algiers." You are now. The ride is free for pedestrians and provides a view of the French Quarter that few visitors bother to see--but is worth the trip. Once you get to Algiers Point, there are several walkable and worthwhile pubs, including the Crown & Anchor. The ferry ride, which is admittedly a little short, begins with a 180-degree turn that we've never quite figured out but it still is sort of mildly amusing. Service begins at 6 a.m. and continues until midnight. $1.00 per car charge from the Algiers side. To take the ferry, look for the pier at the foot of Canal, next to the aquarium.

Airport Shuttle

504.522.3500. Your practical choices to get from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and downtown New Orleans are taxi, rental car or Airport Shuttle. Unfortunately, we are lacking a commuter train and the city bus that stops at the airport ... frankly, we can't figure it out. The shuttle runs from the 1st level baggage claim to downtown hotels. The cost is $15.00 each way. Call at least 2 hours in advance to reserve your travel back to the airport.

Trains & Buses

Union Passenger Terminal. 1001 Loyola Ave. (Central Business District)  As much as passenger rail has a hub in the south, New Orleans is it. A whole three Amtrak trains run through town: The City of New Orleans (New Orleans to Chicago), The Crescent (New Orleans to New York), and The Sunset Limited (Los Angeles to Orlando). The trains are wildly off-schedule with on-board bathrooms that stink and food that comes from some dark and processed place. But what about the inescapable romantic curiosity of train travel? More information at Amtrak.com. Greyhound (Bus) Lines shares the Union Passenger Terminal with Amtrak. And if you're willing to transfer 7 or 8 times, a Greyhound bus will uncomfortably take you anywhere you want to go. The Union Passenger Terminal itself is somewhat interesting with its 1950s streamlined architecture and a fascinating fresco by Conrad Albrizio that runs the length of the building.
